I was visiting my grandmother daily in a local nursing home and hospital for her various medical conditions. One day, when a nurse was changing her, I noticed a severe large wound on her backside, just above her buttocks, and another wound on the heels of her feet. When I questioned the staff of the facility, they said she developed a bed sore which is also commonly called a bedsore. They insisted that the bedsores are injuries that naturally happen when people are elderly and spend most of their time in bed. The wound became larger, it got infected, and the hospital had to perform a surgical procedure to improve the healing. My grandmother suffered with this painful bed sore for almost a year before she died, it never went away.
At the time, my mother worked as a clerk for the New York State Supreme Court and she asked her contacts for a law firm that had the best reputation for handling bedsore cases against nursing homes and hospitals. We were directed to Sinel & Associates, PLLC. Elliot Sinel, personally met with us. He was always available and was very sensitive when working with my mother and I. The law firm aggressively litigated the case and since the insurance company did not want to settle the lawsuit, we ended up going to trial. It was after a full week in a jury trial that the insurance carriers for the hospital and nursing home agreed to a very substantial settlement.
We were not only pleased with the monetary award, but to see these facilities held accountable, we finally had some closure. I would recommend Sinel & Associates, PLLC, to any family with a case involving bedsores or medical issues against a nursing home or hospital.Lisle Bohan, New York City
